Asbestos management is the prevention of an uncontrolled release of asbestos fibres, whether that be during the day to day occupation of premises or through any refurbishment, alterations or maintenance works on premises.
An asbestos management survey will provide information on the location, condition, type and extent of asbestos containing materials within premise and the risks they pose to assist in implementing sufficient policies and procedures to reduce the risk of an uncontrolled release of asbestos fibres.
The management of existing asbestos is important to ensure asbestos materials are not damaged or deteriorate to such an extent that staff, external contractors, the public or visitors are unnecessarily exposed to airborne asbestos fibres. This will take a combined effort, starting with the duty holder or responsible persons and would include co-operation of management, staff, maintenance, contractors and consultants.
